Managing Diabetes during the Holiday Season

Most everyone experiences extra stress at the Holidays but folks with diabetes have the additional worry of maintaining healthy blood sugar levels during this busy time.
Here are a few tips to stay well.

  • Have Fun! Exercise can be taking a walk or playing with grandchildren. Dancing is another form of exercise that is enjoyable, so "Jingle Bell Rock"! Remember that exercise plays an important role in reducing stress and bolstering your immune system.
  • Visit with family and friends and take the focus away from food. Playing cards and board games can become great Holiday traditions.
  • Food does not have to be boring. Fill your plate with your protein. Try tasty seasonings such as dill, tarragon, parsley or pepper. Then add a small amount of vegetable, olive or canola oil and roast in the oven at 450 degrees for 30 minutes.
  • If you have an extra serving at meal time your best choices are chicken, turkey, pork or fish.
  • Another simple tip is to choose whole grain rolls rather than the white breads that are filled with refined carbohydrates.
  • Use a small plate when choosing your favorite desert.

  • Check your blood sugar levels and adjust your diet accordingly.
  • Last but not least get your zzz's. It is important to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep to keep your immune system from getting run down.

Ask your family for their support. If you keep your blood sugar in check you will have more energy and ultimately more fun.
